Swept Away--student film

This is my final film for the digital character animation program at Sheridan College. We spent one year producing the animation short. It is an individual project that we have to complete by ourselves. I modelled everything except the junk pile in the yard which is borrowed from a fellow classmate Yoe Ling. The story evolved and changed as the production went on. I learnt a lot doing the film. I hope you enjoy it!

One Minute Short--Not Over, Not Yet.

More on the One Minute Short---Not Over, Not Yet

After studying animation, I realized how long one minute can be. This one minute short roughly equals to four month of work. It is an individual project.I did every part of the production from character design to animation to final composting. It's my final project in the computer animation program at Sheridan College.

The idea of the short is roughly based on my idea for the interstitial assignment which was too complicated for a 10 second short. It started as a gag that a serious condition turns out to be a joke.

However, as I worked more and more on it, I added more dynamic elements to the characters and the situation. Firstly, it's a story about the weak fights the strong. The ant stops running away and challenged the bully. Even though the situation seemed hopeless, the most unexpected thing happened and the weak wins. I don't want to be talking in a preaching tone of voice "We must be strong and fight back." but rather provide a little bit of encouragement to those who are stuck in a what seems to be hopeless situations. As the Chinese people say "
山穷水尽疑无路,柳暗花明又一村" which roughly translate to "after climbing endless mountains and crossing many rivers there seems to have no way out, but after walking pass some willow
trees there is what you are looking for."

I put in a lot of effort into this film but I really enjoyed the process. I ran into lots of problems, but every problem was solved. These problems are not enemies but rather teachers. Because of them, I know so much more now. Hope you like it.

Character Design

Storyboards--The Duel

This is my first idea for the 10 second interstitial assignment. However it's too complicated has too many characters ( three characters if you count the newspaper) for the assignment. It later becomes the foundation for my final film in the computer animation program. Hope you like it!

10 Second interstitial-- The Leap

More on the 10 Seconds Interstitial

The 10s short is the final assignment for the first semester of Computer Animation, a graduate program at Sheridan College. We had to pick a toy and produce a 10-second-short. My character is based on a villain in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. I did everything except the design of the character for the film.

It's my first time doing a 3D short. I had very little experience with Maya before making this short.
I learned a lot doing this project: modelling, rigging, rendering and stay calm when Maya crushes. Now looking at it, I'm not satisfied with any part of it. However I decide to leave it as it is and not redo it. It's not an excellent short, but it shows my endeavor.

Grace and the Shadow_storyboard update

I keep making changes to the storyboard. Now I understand why they say "boarding is reboarding".

Character Design Update_Grace and the Shadow

Hi everyone, how’s going? I have made changes on my story as well as the character design for my senior film. Now the characters are Grace and her shadow. My idea for the character is that Grace used to be a playful and outgoing person when she was young, but after years of isolation she becomes pessimistic and sorrowful. Making young and old Grace look like the same person is a bit of challenge for me. The story is going to be one day old Grace’s shadow transforms into the shape of her young self, detaches from her  and helps her to reconnect with the world again. I still have to do a lot more sketches to show the young girl’s liveliness, she is too shy right now. Pleas tell me what you think, and what I should change to make her better. Thank you, and have a great evening. :-D

Character Design_Grace and the Shadow

These are the character designs for my senior film. The main character Grace is a old lady who lives in isolation. She uses to be a famous circus performer in the 60s. Grace is ashamed of her appearance as an old lady. So she is always grumpy, sad and refuses to go outside. The shadow clown is an illusion of one of Grace's coworker at the circus. They were friends but lost contact years ago. The shadow's character is opposite of the old lady. He is active,  playful and some time annoying. The shadow helps the lady to regain confidence and embraces her past and present.

One big challenge for me is to make young Grace and old Grace look like they are the same person. I still have a lot to do with these two people. Two weeks left for this semester, scary  : - O
